Trance Dance

Tuesday June 24, 2008
I took my first Shiva Rea inspired class today. Though this happened quite by accident (a sub for one of my regular teachers), I like it when I'm presented with a new yoga style to think about. This is a vinyasa style practice, but I found it pretty unique in the way it encourages movement in the poses. I have to say, this does not come naturally to me, so while I try to just accept any experience that comes my way, part of me was fighting against it. Any Shiva Rea fans care to comment on what you love about this practice?

I absolutely love love love Shiva Rea’s style. I have taken workshops with her and will be doing a teacher training soon. What is also nice is how well she puts together music compilations that seem to flow seamlessly in the classroom setting. I think it is interesting that her style has not traveled across the nation as it is extremely popular in SoCal.

Yes, that is interesting. Although she travels so much doing workshops, I wonder why it isn’t catching on more elsewhere. I was wondering if some of it has to do with her style not really translating that well to other teachers.

Two of my instructors took her teaching retreats and the flow is more graceful. Just another variation of yoga transitions. But I do enjoy this 60 to 75 minute vinyasa flow style 4 to 6 times a month.

I have a Shiva Rea DVD, and I find it quite different than any other books or DVDs I have, or classes I have taken. She puts a lot of emphasis on creativity, and doing what feels right in the moment. My traditional practice is more of a Hatha/Iyengar style, but it’s nice as a sort of yoga cross-training.
