Yoga Injuries Revisited
Tuesday July 15, 2008
A lot of press has been devoted to how yoga can cause injuries recently. Bad Karma: When Yoga Harms Instead of Heals from msnbc.com is the latest, providing scary examples of serious conditions including stroke and blindness (to name the scariest) that can be brought on by yoga. Preventing yoga injuries really boils down to following the yogic principal that instructs us to know our own bodies and respect our limitations. This is really what yoga is all about, not bending yourself into the proverbial pretzel only to find you can't walk the next day. Making sure you take classes from qualified teachers is also essential. This may mean leaving the gym for a dedicated yoga studio.

I too read this article and found it very interesting. Check out my blog post on Bikram yoga and my concerns about students being prone to injury in the class I recently attended.

I agree with Raina’s comment about Bikram yoga. The class had a militant, unhealthy feel to it.
I agree with the comment about Bikram yoga leading to injuries. I practiced Bikram yoga in Paris for 1 1/2 year and now have permanent damage to the cartilege in my knee.
When I told my teacher that I heard a grinding sound during Padahastasana and experienced pain after he said that it was a sign of increased flexibility. In fact we are told that Bikram yoga is so good that we cannot hurt ourselves which is misleading. I agree with Ann: Make sure you take classes from qualified teachers. Just because they have a certificate doesn’t mean they’re qualified.
