Aunt Yoga Returns to Discuss Sequencing

Tuesday August 26, 2008
"Dear Aunt Yoga,

I would like to know what the order of yoga poses should be. Are there particular exercises that should or should not follow each other? I think there is a specific rule governing sequences of yoga."

Read Aunt Yoga's response on how yoga poses should be sequenced.

Time out!

“you should wait until you are finished with backbending before forward bending.”

Why? Is this why my back hurts after I do a good backbend practice? I tend to do counterposes immediately after most poses in my home practice and sometimes I get a little knot of pain right at the top of my lumbar area. I thought I just wasn’t warmed up enough…

What I mean is, that if you are doing a series of backbends, don’t intersperse forward bends. Say you are going to do three backbends. Wait until after the third before taking a forward bend as a counter pose. Does that make sense?

It makes sense…I’m just wondering why. My tendency is to do a backbend, do a counterpose, do a backbend do a counterpose, and so on. Now I’m wondering if this is bad for me in an anatomical way as well as a metaphysical way…
