Last year, I told you about an attempt to secure a place for competitive yoga (doesn't that just sound wrong?) in the summer Olympics. As the 2010 winter Olympics approach, I had the chance to ask a few Team USA athletes about how yoga complements their training programs. Check out what freestyle skier Emily Cook and speed skater Katherine Reutter had to say.

I don’t think an asana competition is necessarily wrong-headed. Some people object to yogis and yoginis being evaluated and ranked, but India holds asana championships and the best yogis use it as an opportunity to turn inward as you inspire others. Olympic yoga would be admired by millions of people with no knowledge of the practice. Some people find running to be a spiritual experience– should we not have races then? Can running a race not be uplifting?
An asana competition doesn’t turn yoga into anything more, or less, than it is. It does allow us to observe people with a beautiful practice as we work towards our own.
Thank you!
