Looking for a more environmentally conscious alternative to the standard yoga mat? The Manduka eKO Lite Yoga Mat is made of rubber and is biodegradable, but how does it perform?

The Credentials

Manduka yoga mats have a cult-like following in the yoga world. Their premium mat is heavy, thick, and grippy. The eKO Lite mat is their offering in the increasingly popular market for light-weight, open-cell rubber mats. These mats are more environmentally friendly than that standard synthetic mats; this one is even biodegradable. Manduka is producing to mat in two thicknesses: the "lite" version is the thinner one, intended for easier portability.

The Reality

Rubber mats have two disadvantages: they are heavy and they smell. This "lite" version of the eKO Mat is a little thinner and a little heavier than a standard PVC yoga mat. The thickness and lack of cushion may disappoint those familiar with Manduka's premium mats. It is textured to prevent slippage. This mat carries a very strong rubber odor. Airing the mat improves things slightly, but the smell remains pretty strong.

Is This Mat for You?

If you are committed to the idea of an environmentally friendly mat, the eKO Lite is a good option for those who travel or tote their mats around town. Those with sensitive noses may find the rubbery smell to be too much.
