Headstand Tips

Thursday June 22, 2006
I have been practicing Headstand for years, but recently I felt like I had lost my headstand mojo when I started having neck pain and trouble holding the pose. I got it back, thanks to a few tips from good teachers:

1. Place the heel of your palm directly between your eyebrows, then bring your palm on to your forehead with the fingers extending towards the crown of your head. The place where the tip of your middle finger rests is where your head should be placed on the floor during Headstand. In my case, I was too far forward on my head before.

2. Imagine that a piece of paper could slide between your head and the floor. This will remind you to really press down the arms and take pressure off the neck. I found this one so helpful. I hope you will too!

Hello Ann, I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy this site (I am subscribed via RSS, and read it whenever there is something new). Not too advanced, not too “begginers”, not too commercial (although the Agilily pants tip seems cool). The headstand tips are just fine for me, as I have been doing headstand for a while (against the wall). But if I stay too long I feel the neck all ackward. I will try with your tips, thanks!

Hi Chantal,
There are only two suggestions here. But there is also a video on headstand you might like to check out.

I love the videos of the poses, I’m a visual learner. And I love the tips, because it’s those little details that will make or break a pose. Great Job!

I started doing headstand against the wall, but after practicing breathing exercising & meditation every morning, I’ve bypass my fear & now I’m practicing near the wall.
I know that in due time, I gain my confidence to practice it in the middle of the room.
So, Francisca why don’t you try it out & see it it works for you too.

Namaste.
