Bow Pose - Dhanurasana Is the Yoga Pose of the Week
Sunday August 24, 2008
Even if your backbend never gets this deep, bow pose feels great on the chest and between the shoulder blades. It's also a good way to get in a full backbend if your wrists are too sensitive for a pose like full wheel.

Are the palm of your hands supposed to be outward and gripping your feet at the inward side? This is the way I’ve been taught and corrected many times because it seems to be an easier (but not correct) pose. You’re thoughts are anticipated.

The hand position illustrated here is the one I’ve always been taught. It is also the one shown by Iyengar in Light on Yoga.
Thank you Ann, i followed your comment with a few googles and it is clear that the instruction I have received is (possibly) incorrect. That is a bit disconcerting.

Well, I believe this is the more classic hand position, but that doesn’t mean the other one is incorrect. There are always a lot of variations on poses. Putting the hands inside the ankles will just give a slightly different stretch.
