The Wanderlust Yoga and Music Festival began in 2009 as a collaboration between Schuyler Grant, the founder of New York City's Kula Yoga Project, and her husband, Jeff Krasno, who co-owns Velour Music Group, a record label, and is a co-founder of the yoga talent agency YAMA. The first Wanderlust Fest took place in Squaw Valley, CA on Lake Tahoe in the summer of 2009 and featured yoga teachers John Friend (founder of
Anusara yoga) and Shiva Rea (trance dancer) and musical acts Spoon, Broken Social Scene, and MC Yogi. The festival was an immediate success, returning in 2010 with Shiva Rea,
Baron Baptiste, and Seane Corn on the yoga side and Moby headlining the music acts.
In 2011, Wanderlust expanded, adding events in Miami Beach and Vermont to its roster in addition to the signature Squaw Valley gathering (July 28-31), which will see the return of John Friend, Shiva Rea, and Seane Corn, among others. The musicians will include Michael Franti, who was scheduled to perform in 2009 but had to pull out due to appendicitis.
Summer 2012 will see Wanderlust events occurring in Vermont (June 21-24), Colorado (July 5-8), California (July 26-29), and British Columbia (August 23-26). In addition, the first yoga studio to bear the name opened in April, 2012 in Austin, Texas.
